Diane Raye Wells was born June 20, 1936 to M.V. and Doris Almkov Wells in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in the Chicago area, spending summers with her grandparents in Mason City, Iowa, before moving with her family to New York, where she graduated from Roosevelt High School in Scarsdale 1954. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, where she met her husband, a student at the University of Missouri. Diane and Paul R. Morris were married on June 27, 1955 in Kansas City. The couple lived in Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa before settling in Scribner, where they owned and operated Morris Oil Company for more than 30 years. Diane also put her lifelong interest in fashion to work as a buyer for Schweser's Department Store in Fremont, where they later retired.
In addition to caring for her seven children, Diane enjoyed playing bridge for many decades, and hosting her women's and couples' clubs, especially during the Christmas season. Diane was always eager to undertake DIY home renovation projects, and she and her husband created many lovely homes for their family. Her attention to detail extended to the exterior, as she could be found on her knees pulling weeds well into her 80s! Keeping her grandchildren dressed in style was another particular joy for ''Grandma Di'' as she loved nothing more than shopping in Omaha with a stop for Chinese food!
Diane's children and grandchildren particularly remember her generous gift giving, her elaborate children's birthday parties, her hospitality and how she never missed a chance to celebrate her friends and neighbors, as their birthdays and other special days filled her annual calendars. Diane's father once said two things he never thought his daughter would enjoy were camping and wallpapering, as she was as comfortable sitting beside a lake as she was shopping on Fifth Avenue!
Left to cherish Diane's memory are her husband, children Kathy (Dan) Grassmeyer of Thornton, Colorado, Mike (Brenda Christensen) of Omaha, Lisa (Tom) Blankenau of Lincoln, Randy (Laura) of Houston, Texas, Brad (Mary) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Amy (Ryan) Stewart of Golden, Colorado; 20 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, sisters Marylyn Rosen of New Orleans and Cheryl (Franco) Generini of Florence, Italy, sister-in-law Janice Hill and brother in law Lonnie (Frances) Morris as well as dozens of nieces and nephews.
Diane was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Linda, her dear aunts Evelyn and Glenys Almklov and her son Daren.
Celebration of her life will take place 10:30am, Saturday, August 1 at First Lutheran Church, 3200 East Military, Fremont, NE 68025, followed by a light lunch at the church. Burial will take place at a later date.
Memorials are suggested to Fremont Cosmopolitan Club for diabetes research and treatment.
