Harland was born on July 20, 1921 in Osmond, Nebraska to Robert and Meta 'Gloe' Kumm. Harland was baptized, confirmed, and later married, all in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Osmond. He grew up on a farm near Osmond, and graduated from Osmond High School in 1938. He then farmed with his father.

He served in the United States Army from February of 1943 to November of 1945, with time in Germany. He saw action in the 'Battle of the Bulge', and his unit met up with the Russian Army.

Harland returned to Osmond to farm, then farmed near Laurel for 3 years. He moved to Fremont and worked for Kimber Chicks Hatchery for 4 years. Then he moved to Wayne where he farmed and worked for a hatchery. In 1969, he returned to Fremont and worked for Valmont until retiring in 1984.

On April 12, 1944, Harland was married to Lavila Schumacher in Osmond. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont, and VFW Post 854 and American Legion Post 20, both of Fremont.

Harland was preceded in death by his daughter Carol in March of 1990, a great granddaughter, and a sister Alice, and his parents Robert and Meta Kumm.

The funeral service will be 2 PM Friday (April 25th) in Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Michael Meyer officiating. The committal will follow in Memorial Cemetery. Military Honors will be rendered by the Fremont Honor Guard of American Legion Post 20 and VFW Post 854. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church Bell Tower and the Alzheimer's Association.

Visitation at the Ludvigsen Mortuary will be on Thursday (April 24) from 2 to 8 PM, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 PM.
