Jim was born October 22, 1939 in Fremont NE to Harold and Grace 'Carpenter' Strenger. He lived in Nickerson until his father died when Jim was 11. He moved to Omaha where he attended school before joining the Army. He served two separate enlistments from1956-1959 and 1962-1965, both as an Air Traffic Controller in Stuttgart and Kitzingen, Germany. After his military service, Jim returned to Valley. He married Dottie McKee on January 22, 1967. Jim's working years were spent at Woodie's Standard Station in Valley and as a driver for Ready-Mix Concrete in Omaha. In 1969 he became an Air Traffic Controller stationed in Aurora, Illinois, Negaunee, Michigan, and Rockford, Illinois. He returned to Lincoln Airport tower in 1979 before finishing his career at Eppley Air Field in Omaha. After he retired, he taught at the Air Traffic Control Academy in Oklahoma, making many trips between Fremont and Oklahoma while the family remained in Fremont. He spent his retirement helping in Dottie's tax office, serving and fellowshipping with the First Baptist Men's group, and was proud to care for the family home and yard. The family had memorable vacations together to Disney World, Branson/Silver Dollar City, and Alaska. His grandchildren lovingly called him ''Bapoo'', a name given to him by his eldest grandson.
Jim was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Fremont before joining United Faith Community Church in Valley.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years - Dottie, of Fremont, Daughters - Aimee (Bill) Turner of Lincoln, and Abbie Strenger Sukut of Fremont, Grandchildren - David Rushing of Imperial NE, Maddie Rushing of Lincoln, Ne and Lucie and Lucas Sukut of Fremont, NE, Sister-in-law - Cheryl (Howard) Strenger, and Brother-in-law - Wayne (Catherine) Dein.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, mother, stepfather Linfield Keim, an infant brother, sister Catherine Dein and brother Howard Strenger.
There is no viewing but the family will receive friends at the Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel in Fremont on Thursday, July 31, 2025 from 5pm to 7pm. The memorial service will be 10am, Friday, August 1, 2025 at the United Faith Community Church in Valley. Burial will be at a later date in Ridge Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the United Faith Community Church.
