Bobby J. Shannon

November 26, 1931 - April 30, 2013

He was born November 26, 1931 in Cushing, Oklahoma to Guy E. Shannon and Ima M. (Little) Shannon.
Bob grew up and lived in several places in Oklahoma. He entered the U.S. Army in 1950 and served until 1954 as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After his service, he moved to Fremont and lived here until his death.
Bob worked for Hormel Food Corporation from 1955 to 1984 when he was forced to retire due to his health (stroke).
He married Barbara J. Kerns on June 8, 1952 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
He enjoyed many outdoor activities including camping, hunting, fishing, and motorcycle riding, which he and Barbara did together with many of their friends. Bob was involved in many community service organizations, most importantly, the Fremont Volunteer Fire Department in which he served for 41 years in many capacities. He and Barbara were instrumental in helping to establish the Special Olympics program here in Fremont. At one point, Bob served as a Boy Scouts leader for his "special kids".
He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Fremont, as well as daughters, Debra Hitchler (and husband, Dan) of Fremont, and Denise Shannon of Hastings as well as a sister Patsy Bishop of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Bob loved and adored his grandchildren, Jessica Hitchler of Lincoln and Tyler Hitchler (and wife Breanna) of Omaha. He also had one great-grandchild, Silas.
He was preceded in death by his parents a daughter, Diane and 2 brothers Garland (Lee) and Jack Shannon.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 3, 2013, at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Fremont with the Rev. Russell McDowell officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, May 2nd from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Ludvigsen's Mortuary in Fremont. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with military honors conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854 and American Legion Post 20.
Memorials may be given to St. Timothy Lutheran Church for their general fund.
