Gene H. Hilbers, age 84, of Scribner
Died Wednesday February 3, 2021 at home.

Gene Herman Hilbers was born Dec 20, 1936 to Oltman and Wilma Hilbers. He was baptized and confirmed at St Paul's, Hooper where he was a life-long member. Gene served on the Church Council, other church committees and was superintendent of the Sunday School. Gene attended school district 62 and graduated from Scribner High School in 1955, where the saying goes "where trouble is brewing he's doing the stirring". He was inducted into the Navy December 1955 and stationed in San Diego, California on the USS Stonecounty LST 1141. Gene was a member of the Scribner American Legion.

On February 14, 1960, he married his sweetheart, Marlene Von Seggern, at St Paul's. They made their home on a farm where Gene worked the land for 60 years. They moved to Scribner in 2016, but Gene continued farming up until his death.

Gene enjoyed cheering his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren's activities and watching the Huskers. He loved to play a good hand of cards and belonged to a couples sheepshead club for 59 years until Covid. He most enjoyed traveling with Marlene, spending time with his family and working on the farm.
Gene is survived by his wife (Marlene), four daughters Pam (Jeff) Pribnow, Sandra (Brian) Tigges, Suzanne (Jeremy) Van Ampting and Linda (Bernie) Howard. 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, four brothers, Raymond (Pauline), Vernon (Dianne), Dennis (Kathy), Loran (Robin) and sister Anita (Robert) Backhus; Brothers in law Gene (Sue) Von Seggern, Mark Meyerink and Donald Alberts, many nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by Parents, Oltman and Wilma; brother, Wayne; sister, Karilyn Alberts and sister-in-law Cheryl Meyerink.

Memorial suggested to the Scribner Rescue, Scribner Volunteer Fire Department or St. Paul's church.
Visitation will be Friday, from 4-7pm at Ludvigsen's Scribner Funeral Chapel in Scribner. Masks are required. A private family funeral will be held Saturday. A YouTube link will be posted when available to watch a recording of the service. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery north of Hooper with Military Honors.
