- Name: Elmer Hass, 84
- Died: Saturday, November 07, 2009, in Fremont
- Elmer was born July 28, 1925 on the farm in Washington County to William and Matilda (Meier) Hass. His growing up years were spent there in Washington County and in Scribner.
He served in the United States Navy from September of 1942 to July of 1946. He served aboard the USS Guam, and had the rank of Chief Petty Officer at the time of his discharge.
On January 9, 1946, Elmer was married in St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Scribner to Hope Carlstrom. Then while Elmer was completing his military service, Hope lived on Staten Island (New York). Following his discharge, Elmer and Hope came to Fremont, and Elmer worked as a baker for a time. Then Elmer worked on the construction of the plant that was to become Hormel's, and then became one of Hormel's first employees. He retired after 37 years because of health problems.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Izaak Walton League, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He had been a member of the American Legion Post 20 and VFW Post 854. And he was a member of the AFL-CIO Labor Union 216 and had served as its president for several years. In his earlier years, Elmer had also been a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader.
Elmer was very devoted to his wife and family and those surviving are:
wife - Hope
son - Roger and wife Sue Hass of Ft. Collins, Colorado
daughter - Trudy and husband Robert Jones of West Point
4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren
brother-in-law - John E. Carlstrom of Fremont
He was preceded in death by 3 brothers.
The funeral service will be at 10 AM Tuesday (Nov. 10th, 2009) at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Michael Meyer officiating. The committal will follow in Ridge Cemetery with Military Honors by the Fremont Honor Guard of American Legion Post 20 and VFW Post 854. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society and to Trinity Lutheran Church.
Visitation at the Ludvigsen Mortuary, Fremont, will be today (Monday - Nov. 9th) from 2 to 8 PM, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 PM., and at the church Tuesday morning for an hour before the service.
